Deacon Patrick Fitzsimons
I am a fourth year theology student at Mundelein Seminary, outside Chicago. My home parish is Good Shepherd, Frankfort. I was born in Ireland, and I have lived in the United States for over six years. I am the youngest child and the only boy of a family of six. I grew up on our small family farm at Summerhill, County Meath, just 23 miles west of Dublin. Growing up in Ireland, our Catholic faith was a very important part of our family life. My parents share with us the importance of prayer and the celebration of the Eucharist as central to our lives. From an early age, I was encouraged to be actively involved in the life of our local parish. I served Mass and was involved in the youth group. I think it was during this time that I first began to think about priesthood. My parents were very supportive of my vocational journey and encouraged me on the path to the priesthood. As I write this article I am looking forward to my ordination to the Deaconate (Saturday, 12 August 2000) and my last year of theology at Mundelein Seminary. This is a very exciting time for me as I begin the final stage of my preparation for priesthood. It has been a very rewarding and fulfilling journey for me. God has blessed me in so many different ways, particularly in the people I have been privileged to meet and minister with on this journey. I look forward to ordination and full-time priestly ministry in the Diocese of Lexington.
